Understanding your bill
When you receive a bill from Ebico, don’t be alarmed if this isn’t on Ebico headed paper. Your bills, or statement will come from our partners, who are responsible for sending bills on our behalf.
The headings on these bills may differ depending your location in Britain. In Wales, you will receive bills from our partners at SWALEC. In England, you will receive bills from our partners at Southern Electric. And in Scotland, you will receive bills from our partners at Scottish Hydro Electric. Each of these bills will have the EquiGas and/or EquiPower logos clearly displayed, depending on the fuels you have with Ebico.
What will my bill look like?
Depending on the tariff you are on, the tariff will show as: EquiPower/EquiGas Standard or EquiPower Economy 7.
Your bill will be based on two readings on your meter. Your end reading from the last bill and your latest meter reading.
Your latest meter reading will either be given by you, taken by one of our partners’ meter reading team, or will be an estimated reading.
How do I know if my bill is estimated?
The easiest way is to look at the front page of your bill. Underneath your address you’ll see a either a thumbs up or a thumbs down picture.
A thumbs up means we have billed you to an actual meter reading. This is great – you’re paying the right amount for the energy you’re using.
A thumbs down means we have billed you to an estimated meter reading. This is not ideal – you could be paying too much or too little for your energy.
You can also check by looking at the back of your bill. In the section that explains your statement, you’ll find two sets of digits. The first set is your previous meter reading and the second is your current reading – you’re billed for the difference between the two. If there’s an (E) after the second set of digits, your bill is estimated.
How do I know if my bill is calculated correctly?
Electricity is calculated as follows:
Once the amount of units used over the period is calculated, we use this to work out the final charges on the bill.
| Meter: S75C30608 | Reading last time | Reading this time | Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unrestricted units | 11362 | 12197 | 835 |
835 Units = 835 kWh
835kWh x Unit Price For Your Region (Excluding VAT)
+ VAT (5%)
if you are on Economy 7 your bill will show
two calculations, one for the day rate and one for the night rate, which
will be added together to show the final amount due.
Gas is calculated as follows:
Before we can work out the final charges on the bill, first we have to convert the units used over the period from ft3 x100 (hundreds of cubic feet) or m3 (cubic metres) to kWh (kilowatt hours).
| Meter: 5026929 | Reading last time | Reading this time | Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unrestricted units | 3739 | 4562(E) | 823 |
Converting from cubic metres or hundreds of cubic feet to kilowatt hours:
- We subtract the previous meter reading (from your last bill) from the most recent meter reading or estimate (as shown in the table above)
- We multiply the result by 2.83 to obtain the volume used in cubic metres. (Note. This step is not required for customers with a metric (m3) gas meter – only ones with ft3. You can check for this by looking next to the read-out on your meter)
- We multiply this number by the calorific value* shown on your invoice in MJ/m3.
- We multiply the result by the meter correction factor shown on your invoice (This corrects for the slight manufacturing measurement tolerance of your meter).
- We divide the result by 3.6 to obtain the number of kilowatt hours (kWh) used.
* Please note that the calorific values change on a monthly basis, depending on the blend of gas in your area in that month. The amount stated on your gas bill is the calorific value reported to us by the gas grid operating company.
For example:
823 Units x 2.83 (only if your meter measures cubic feet x 100 rather than cubic metres)
(823 x 2.83) x 39.2 (Calorific Value example)
(823 x 2.83 x 39.2) x 1.02256 (Correction Factor)
(823 x 2.83 x 39.2 x 1.02256) / 3.6
= 25,933kWh
Once the conversion to kWh is done we multiply this number by the pence per kWh rate to obtain the cost of gas you have used:
kWh x Unit Price (Excluding VAT)
+ VAT (5%)
The total on the bill will be a calculation of all units used, plus 5% VAT.
What if I have any problems?
If you have any problems with your bills, the unit price, or the reading on the bill; you will need to contact our billing department with our partners at Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE). You can contact the billing department by calling 0800 300 000 and selecting the appropriate options.
If they are unable to resolve your billing issue, or cannot help you, please email us at and we will help you as best we can.
