Electricity suppliers
Currently there are more than 40 electricity suppliers operating in the UK domestic market.
Since October 2005 these electricity suppliers in the UK have been obliged to make available to their customers the details of the mix of fuels used to generate their electricity. It is mandatory for all electricity suppliers to label their products with the fuels used to generate their electricity as well as the carbon emissions and the nuclear waste produced.
So it is now possible for consumers to research how the electricity that they purchase from the electricity suppliers is generated and choose the mix that they feel is right for them. Each of the electricity suppliers may generate electricity from one or more of coal or gas fired power stations, nuclear power or energy generated from renewable sources.
Electricity suppliers fuel mix disclosure
Once a year each of the electricity suppliers will usually notify its customers of its fuel mix, more often than not delivered with a bill. Customers can contact the electricity suppliers directly if they are on a tariff where a bill is not issued at least once a year. Alternatively there are a number of websites which provide this information for all of the electricity suppliers.
A number of electricity suppliers report different fuel mixes to different users, often differentiating between industrial and domestic customers. In essence it is not unusual for some electricity suppliers to provide a lower percentage of nuclear power to the more discerning domestic consumers and a much higher percentage to their less discerning industrial customers.
The full disclosure by the electricity suppliers of the fuel mix of the electricity supplied to its industrial and larger commercial organisations is not always readily available. Once again, there are a number of other sources which may carry this information for most of the electricity suppliers.
